Inspired by Aboriginal Art
Using glue sand and glitter the children used aboriginal art symbols and lines to create these pictures on black card.
Taking Action
After completing her canvas Lena created her own line and dot painting at the easel.
Dot and Lines on Canvas
Aboriginal Painting
Today the children used a small canvas that they painted black in the previous lesson. They used acrylic paint in warm colours to paint aboriginal symbols and then they filled in the space with different lines using cotton buds for the dots.
Aboriginal Art - using symbols and planning
the children are going to create a small canvas using the same symbols that Aboriginal artists use and painting in a similar way to Nellie with lines and dots. First they planned out their ideas on paper using a guide with the different symbols and their meanings. Here you can see the symbols they had to choose from and their drawings.
Aboriginal Art
Grade 1 are looking at artists that work as part of a community - their previous unit in class was about communities. the children understand that a community is a group of people that live, work and play together. In Australia Aboriginal people having been living, working and playing together for millions of years. they create art that is very special and particular to them. they base their paintings on symbols that represent something they called "Dreamings". We watched a video of Aboriginal artist Nellie Marks paintings. the children loved watching the picture evolve. they liked the video so much they asked if I could put it into the weebly. Paste the following into youtube and you will see Nellie hard at work.

Drawing Skills
At the beginning and end of every year the children practice their drawing skills and look for improvement by drawing the same pot of pens and pencils. For some children who had completed this task in KG2 it was their third try - some of the drawings looked amazing with lots of details and careful shading.
Art Portfolios
After practicing their printing skills the children were ready to create and print their art portfolio covers. First they drew their self portraits onto the polystyrene sheets. The following lesson the children were reminded of the printing process, we discussed what it means to be responsible and then away they went. They independently inked their tiles and printed their portraits four times and in two different colours. They did an amazing job and everyone was finished in record time.
Looking at Line
Artists use line to help them draw and paint, to help them see the shape in a sculpture or to make an artwork with textiles. Grade 1 talked about the different types of lines we can draw and learnt a poem about a snake called Larry. They then explored drawing and inventing their own lines on polystyrene sheets. The following week the children printed their designs in various colours.
What is Art?
For their first lesson in Grade 1 the children thought about art and what art actually is. They looked at different examples and then wrote their own ideas down. Being an art lesson they then had to be creative and turn their paper into an artwork too.
