The Art of Sound
During this lesson the children listened to different music tracks to create spontaneous creations. They also learnt about the artist Jackson Pollock, they watched a video about his painting titled "Blue Poles", they discovered how he created pictures by throwing and splashing paint onto the canvas making it up as he went along.
Light Art
The children went inside our very own dark room - inside they were very excited to discover so many different lights some moving, some still and many different colours. They also found items that can reflect the light too. Using cameras they took photos and created the amazing artwork you can see below.
Funny Faces
The children thought about how a photograph is made - we decided that you definitely need some light for it to work. After a brief history of photography they were shown some special paper that reacts with the light. Using loose parts the children arranged the pieces to create funny faces. These parts were then put onto the special paper, their faces were then left on the window sill for the paper to react to the light. At the end of the lesson we discovered that the areas of the paper that were covered by the buttons or shells turned a darker blue and where the light had shone on the paper it turned paler - almost white. The image needed to be fixed so it didn't change any more - this was done by submerging the paper in water - what was white and blue then reversed - very magical. the following lesson the children used their pictures to create a funny face collage.
Moblies
With this project we continued with the idea that artists can use the concept of light travelling through coloured transparent materials to create art works. The children used coloured cellophane and glue to create a stained glass effect - decorating their gluey cellophane creation with transparent beads and some large glitter squares to add an element of reflection of light too. When they were dry the children trimmed the edges and added a pipe cleaner to hang up their mobile.
DIY Stained glass
During previous art lessons the children created small stained glass windows with cellophane - have a look at how one of the art room windows has been transformed in the pictures below.
Transparency
A material that allows light to travel through it is called transparent, in this art lesson the children looked at a large piece of stained glass we have at school, they noticed how the glass looked different form each side depending on where the window was. They also looked at some photographs where artists have used coloured glass. They then designed their own stained glass window using oil pastel and water colour paint.

Light and Sound
Central Idea - Light and sound affect the way we experience the world.
Over the next few art lessons the work the children will focus on will be directly linked to their current unit of inquiry. In class the children are looking at how light and sound can be created and changed. We will also be looking at these ideas in the art room, we will be looking at how artists can use the varying properties of light to influence and create art. They will also make art that can make sounds. It should be an exciting few weeks.
Drawing with Line
Every year children in KG2 - Grade 5 will see how their drawing skills have improved by drawing a pot containing art room tools. They complete this drawing at the beginning and end of each year. The drawings below are the very first attempt. I was exceedingly impressed with what the children achieved, they actually enjoyed this task much more than they thought they would and the children were very pleased with their efforts.
Looking at Line
Artists use line to help them draw and paint, to help them see the shape in a sculpture or to make an artwork with textiles. KG2 talked about the different types of lines we can draw and learnt a poem about a snake called Larry. They then explored drawing and inventing their own lines on white boards. After this the children used paint to make a black and white patterns with many different lines.

Art Portfolios
This cycle the KG2 children have been drawing their self-portrait with black oil pastel and then using watercolour paint to add colour and detail. These portraits will now become the cover for this year's art portfolio.
What is Art?
During their first lesson of the year KG2 investigated art. They looked at many images of famous art works and then discussed what they think art is.
